The Kosovo Metrology Agency (KMK), which operates within the Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship, Trade and Innovation (MIETI), through the laboratory for the verification of precious metals, controls the purity and quality of gold, silver, platinum and palladium products, aiming at implementing legal requirements and protecting consumer interests.
The laboratory’s work is based on Law No. 08/L-029 on Precious Metal Works, which sets out the operating conditions and technical requirements for the content, composition and purity of these metals. According to legal requirements, economic operators must submit products for verification to the KMA before placing them on the market.
The verification process begins with the receipt of products brought by economic operators. Initially, they are measured with calibrated scales, while the accompanying documentation is also checked, including evidence of the origin of the products and the relevant invoices. The products must be documented and have the necessary evidence.
After this process, the precious metal works are analyzed on state-of-the-art equipment that uses X-ray technology to determine the composition and purity of the metal. To ensure the accuracy of the results, the laboratory performs three consecutive measurements for each product, comparing the results with the requirements and standards set by law.
The laboratory verifies four types of precious metals: gold, silver, platinum and palladium. For gold jewelry, verification includes various purities, including 14, 18, 22 and 24 carats. The check is carried out for each product separately, with no general limit set for the number of pieces that can be submitted for verification.
When the results confirm that the products meet the technical requirements for purity and accurate declaration of composition, KMA prepares the relevant report and the products are sealed to prove that they have undergone the verification process. This allows consumers to have more certainty about the products they purchase, while providing businesses with a controlled process in accordance with legal requirements.
The importance of this service is also reflected in the requests of economic operators. During 2025 alone, the KMA laboratory received 470 requests for the verification of precious metals.
KMA calls on citizens to request the relevant warranty and documentation from the seller when purchasing gold and silver products. Verification and sealing of products, along with consumer information, are important for increasing trust in the market and for protection from incorrect statements about the purity of precious metals.
The submission of products for verification is a legal obligation for economic operators, while failure to comply with legal requirements may result in sanctions under applicable legislation.
