The Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade, namely the Agency for Industrial Property, for the first time in the Republic of Kosovo, has issued a decision for the protection of a local product, Sharri Cheese, based on the Law on Geographical Indications and Designations of Origin.
The fact that "Djathi i Sharri" is a unique product of the Sharri Region and the characteristics of the culture, land and environment that are associated with the designation, after the decision to protect it as a designation of origin also makes it a matter of national pride.
This protection contributes to the identification of the unique area that produces a particular product by distinguishing it from other cheeses and also promotes local production and the tradition of cheese making in Kosovo, and helps consumers in terms of quality assurance and origin of the cheese produced in this region.
With this protection, the use of the name "Djathi i Sharri" respectively the certification and production control mechanisms will ensure the quality standards for this product.
The Geographical Indicator, in this case the protected "Djathi i Sharrit", has a special importance for the development of the cheese economic sector in Kosovo and promotes rural tourism. Bjeshkët e Sharrit, being a cross-border region, adds even more importance to this product, making Kosovo the first country to protect a product with this designation.
MIET congratulates the members of the Association of Sharri Cheese Producers, for the work and dedication shown so far. The registration of Sharri Cheese is among the most important decisions that the Ministry has taken in the preservation and protection of local products and the promotion of our national tradition.
MIET will continue to commit to the protection of as many local products as possible with Geographical Indications or Designations of Origin.
