The wood and furniture industry has always been one of the most sustainable and creative sectors of our economy. This industry combines traditional craftsmanship with extraordinary modernization potential. This sector represents not only production, but also innovation, design, export, and the creation of quality jobs.
In a global market where natural and personalized products are increasingly gaining attention, Kosovo has the opportunity to position itself as a competitive and creative producer.
The support programs of the Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade (MIET), implemented through the KIESA agency, have had a direct impact on the technological transformation of the industry. The purchase of modern machinery, industrial automation, innovation, digitalization, certification and participation in dozens of international fairs, each year, have strengthened enterprises and increased Kosovo's export capacities, mainly with exports to Europe and the United States of America.
The wood and furniture industry, as one of the strongest contributors to reducing Kosovo's trade deficit, creates important employment opportunities, especially for young people and young professionals in crafts. Through vocational education, dual training and cooperation between businesses and vocational schools, we can build a skilled, creative and ready workforce for the challenges of the modern market.
This Annual Wood Convention reminds us that economic development should not be at odds with environmental responsibility. We must promote sustainable wood use, forest regeneration, the use of recyclable materials, and the implementation of green standards at every link in the production chain.
MIET aims to identify product groups that can contribute to import substitution and increase the value of domestic products. In this context, based on the ‘’Study on the Utilization of Natural Resources and Minimally Processed Goods in Kosovo’’, wood products are one of the main groups that will contribute to increasing domestic value added.
Another study by MIET " The Industrial Symbiosis Mapping in Kosovo" that is currently under development, emphasizes that the wood industry is expected to play a key role in the concept of circular industry, contributing to the production of green products that support environmental conservation. According to Circular Industry we need to think differently: to reuse, recycle and reduce waste. New design directions, the use of wood waste for new products and the return of materials to the process are an enormous opportunity that creates added value while protecting the environment.
The Wood Convention 2025 is a unique opportunity to collaborate, exchange ideas and create opportunities to increase the value of this sector. The engagement of all industry stakeholders, from producers, Government, to research institutions and international organizations, will be essential to create a strong and competitive sector, which not only contributes to equitable economic growth, but also fosters the development of a green and sustainable industry.
I hope that the 2025 Wood Convention will bring inspiration, new partnerships and concrete steps towards a more sustainable and prosperous future.
