MTI’s position towards fuel trading

Given that there is currently a public debate on the price of fuels in the market of the Republic of Kosovo, we emphasize that the Cabinet of the Ministry of Trade and Industry is analysing with professionalism the concerns of citizens from the legal angle of consumer protection.

As it is known, the first priority of MTI Minister, Endrit Shala, remains the protection of the consumer in the Kosovo market including that of fuel and MTI is following with maximum focus the current market and petroleum situation, including the quality.

MTI, as you know, has taken a number of consumer advocacy decisions that are not limited to certain areas, but as an approach will include all the areas, a matter we are working on every day.

In terms of public opinion and media debates and publications on petroleum prices in recent days, MTI is analysing the current legislation including Article 11 of the Law on Trade of Petroleum, which article has never been applied so far, although history has provided evidence that the price of the international petroleum exchange has always fluctuated.

MTI and the Government of Kosovo base all its decisions on accurate analyses and in accordance with legislation.

Minister Endrit Shala has ordered the relevant departments and inspectorate a few days ago and required for accurate data on the current state of affairs regarding the international exchange price fluctuations, customs duties, excise, and other costs, an analysis that we have to complete in the official institutional reports.

MTI is awaiting the official and final reports of the institutions and depending on their recommendation we will act pursuant to the Law.

We reiterate and assure consumers, citizens and businesses that MTI and Government of Kosovo, after accurate, complete and fair analysis of the current situation, will undertake actions and measures including eventual interventions to prevent the abuse of prices at the expense of consumers.

MTI will support any investigation by the Kosovo Competition Authority in order to stop any undisclosed or open agreements of businesses, in the field of fuels, which agreements have a dominant position in the market thus damaging customers.
