The Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship, Trade and Innovation (MIETI) organized the workshop “From Study to Action – Industrial Symbiosis and Circular Economy”, with the aim of presenting, discussing and validating the findings of the study “Mapping Industrial Symbioses in Kosovo – Economic Analysis and Viability”.
The study was carried out with the support of the LuxDev “Sustainable and Inclusive Growth in Kosovo” project and presents concrete opportunities for the development of industrial symbiosis and the more efficient use of resources in Kosovo.
The workshop was attended by the Chief of Staff of MIETI, Rinor Beka; the Director of the Department of Industry, Valbone Dushi; the LuxDev Resident Representative in Kosovo, Giovanni Tordini; as well as representatives of public institutions, business associations, the private sector and development partners. The study preparation team from Civitta and Riinvest also took part in the event.
During the workshop, the concept of industrial symbiosis and the opportunities it offers for Kosovo’s economy were discussed. Industrial symbiosis involves the use of one business’s waste, by-products and underutilized resources as resources and inputs for another industrial process, creating stronger links and greater cooperation among businesses.
The study identified concrete opportunities for establishing such links, particularly in the plastics, textile, metals, agri-processing, and information and communication technology sectors.
An important part of the discussions was devoted to the next steps and to how these opportunities could be translated into concrete initiatives and projects. Participants discussed which areas should be prioritized, which initiatives should be launched first, and how pilot projects could be developed to enable the practical implementation of the study’s findings.
The contribution of representatives of institutions, businesses and development partners helped validate the study’s findings, set priorities, and identify concrete steps for advancing industrial symbiosis in Kosovo.
The development of industrial symbiosis creates opportunities for the more efficient use of resources, waste reduction, cost savings, the promotion of innovation, and the creation of new investment opportunities. At the same time, it can contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of businesses and to the gradual transition towards a more circular and sustainable economy.
MIETI will continue its cooperation with institutional partners, the business community, the private sector and development partners to translate the study’s findings into concrete actions and pilot projects, with the aim of developing a greener, more efficient and more competitive industry.
